Pierce County ZIP Coverage
Pierce County GIS represents many delivery areas, from islands and mountain communities to Tacoma and the Puyallup valley. The list below groups the county's official GIS place labels into useful search areas. It is not a promise that every code accepts residential street delivery. Some labels mark PO boxes or a unique institution, and several codes overlap a broader place name.

|---|---|---|---|
| 98303, 98333 | Anderson Island and Fox Island | Local delivery labels | Island geography |
| 98328, 98338, 98360, 98387 | Eatonville, Graham, Orting, Spanaway | Named community labels | Municipal and unincorporated areas differ |
| 98329, 98332, 98335 | Gig Harbor area | Gig Harbor labels | One place uses several ZIPs |
| 98371–98375 | Puyallup area | Puyallup labels | City and service area are not identical |
| 98401–98409, 98416, 98418, 98421, 98422 | Tacoma | Tacoma labels | Several city and delivery distinctions |
| 98424, 98439, 98466–98467, 98498–98499 | Fife, Lakewood, Fircrest, University Place | Named place labels | Check the actual street address |
| 98344, 98348, 98385, 98395–98398 | Kapowsin, La Grande, South Prairie, Wauna, Wilkeson, Longmire, Paradise Inn | PO box labels | GIS marks PO BOX type |
| 98430, 98431, 98433, 98438 | Camp Murray, Madigan Hospital, JBLM | Institutional or military labels | Unique and PO box distinctions may apply |
The full GIS inventory also includes Ashford, Buckley, Carbonado, DuPont, Elbe, Lakebay, Longbranch, Milton, Roy, Steilacoom, Sumner, Vaughn, and edge labels such as Enumclaw, Pacific, Auburn, Belfair, and McKenna. Those edge codes show why a county ZIP code directory must not be read as a city roster. Search the address itself before choosing a public-record custodian.
Pierce County GIS ZIP Layer
The county's ZIP metadata, published February 27, 2026, explains how the polygons are built from street centerlines and USPS ZIP+4 AIS data, then adjusted to best fit tax parcels. Fields include ZIP_CODE, FULLNAME, NAME, TYPE, and ZIPCODE_TXT. The data is updated yearly. That method makes it useful for mapping, but it cannot decide mail delivery at one door.
A road segment can carry two or even three ZIPs. Lines may split a road instead of following it. PO-box and unique geographic areas also appear. This local quirk matters when a name search returns a nearby city label that seems wrong. Check the official ZIP FeatureServer for the mapped field, then use USPS for delivery.
GIS place labels are best-fit representations built for mapping and county work. A polygon edge may follow tax parcels even where the postal route behaves differently. Annual updates can also change the layer after a directory or saved export was made. Record the layer date, the ZIP_CODE value, and the parcel number when comparing two results. That small audit trail often explains why a street search, tax card, and postal lookup seem to disagree.
Finding Pierce County Residents by ZIP
A ZIP code directory narrows a large county to a service area, but the next source should match the task. PublicGIS can locate an address and display parcel and boundary layers. ATIP documents address and parcel searching, while the public parcel schema includes SiteZip5, SiteZip4, MailZip5, and MailZip4. The site ZIP and tax mailing ZIP can differ, so keep both labels instead of forcing one result.
- Confirm the full address through the USPS ZIP Lookup.
- Locate it in PublicGIS and note its parcel, city, county, and ZIP layers.
- Compare the ATIP site ZIP with the tax mailing ZIP and parcel number.
- Use only a lawful, scoped voter-data request when election research truly calls for it.
Once the area has narrowed to a road, the Pierce County street directory explains the address and parcel chain. A ZIP-wide result should never be treated as a list of all residents because nonvoters, household members, and people using protected addresses will not appear in the same way.
Pierce County ZIP Search Fields
The public Pierce Search layer supplies useful schema labels even though ATIP's live controls were not exposed in the research capture. These fields distinguish a physical site from the address used for tax mail. A parcel result remains a discovery aid, not a household list or legal title opinion.
| Field | Meaning | Use in a ZIP Search |
|---|---|---|
| SiteZip5 / SiteZip4 | ZIP tied to the parcel site address | Group physical sites |
| MailZip5 / MailZip4 | ZIP in the taxpayer mailing address | Spot an out-of-area mailing address |
| SiteCity | City label on the site record | Compare with municipal limits |
| TaxAccount | Ten-digit parcel number | Carry one exact parcel into ATIP or GIS |
| SiteFull / MailFull | Full site and mailing addresses | Keep the two address roles separate |
Exact dynamic control names can change. Use the current county portal rather than inventing a ZIP filter that is not visible.
Pierce County ZIPs After Annexation
Annexation can change the city that holds local permits and records without moving the building. A Puyallup city document says its addressing system differs from the county's. When annexation takes effect, a new address may be required, while USPS may continue delivering to the old address for up to one year and maps can lag. A deed, directory, and current parcel may therefore show different city labels for the same place.
The county annexation resources include address lookup and potential-annexation maps. Check which government held the record on its date. County records may cover an earlier period, while a city department holds later permits or code cases. This geography is more useful than assuming the postal place named in a ZIP code directory controls every local record.
Pierce County PO Box ZIPs
Kapowsin, La Grande, South Prairie, Wauna, Wilkeson, Longmire, and Paradise Inn appear with PO BOX labels in the county GIS inventory. Tacoma, Lakewood, and JBLM also have codes with PO box distinctions. These records show service geography. They do not prove that a person lives in the named place, and a post office box is not a parcel site.
Camp Murray and Madigan Hospital illustrate institution-based labels. Searchers should avoid turning an organization or delivery ZIP into a claim about a person's home. Confirm the full address through USPS, then use the custodian that holds the exact record sought. If only a box is known, a historical directory, filed business record, or dated correspondence may offer context, but each remains a clue.
Matching Old Pierce County Addresses
ZIP codes did not organize the oldest Pierce County sources. Tacoma directories from 1885 through 1927 are generally arranged by surname, and address cross-references begin in 1928. For an old address, use the directory year and street number, then pair that entry with a Sanborn map, deed, newspaper, or building file. Modern ZIP fields should be added only after the historic place is mapped to a current parcel.
The Northwest Room Buildings Index, city directories, and maps can bridge a renamed street or lost number. Pierce County GIS can then test the present parcel and delivery area. That sequence prevents a current ZIP code directory from erasing the old city, county, or street label found in the source.
Sanborn sources add another time layer. The Library of Congress has a 30-sheet Tacoma set from 1888, while the Washington State Library collection spans 1884 through the 1950s and more than 1,000 maps for 283 Washington cities. Known Pierce-area edition leads include Tacoma, Sumner, Roy, and Wilkeson. A map can show a footprint, street name, lot context, or former use, but no historic sheet supplies a modern ZIP. First match the directory address to the map sheet, then test the current parcel and postal address.
Pierce County ZIPs Versus Cities
A ZIP code is a mail-delivery geography, not a municipality or neighborhood. Pierce County's incorporated cities, unincorporated land, postal place names, and ZIP polygons overlap. The assessor may show a site city and ZIP, while the tax mailing address points elsewhere. A road may cross a ZIP line, and the same ZIP label can span more than one record jurisdiction. Use the city boundary and record date to select the clerk, permit office, or disclosure portal.
- ZIP and ZIP+4
- The five-digit delivery area and a four-digit extension that narrows a delivery segment.
- PO-box ZIP
- A code used for post office boxes rather than ordinary street delivery.
- Unique ZIP
- A code assigned to one large institution or special delivery operation.
- Carrier route
- The set of addresses served by one postal delivery route.
Boundary check. Verify mail delivery with USPS and jurisdiction with Pierce County GIS before relying on a ZIP label.
For any search, save the full street address, five-digit ZIP, parcel number, mapped city, and record date. Those five fields make later differences much easier to resolve with USPS, the county, or a city clerk.
